How To Improve Your Chipping Accuracy

When you watch a pro golfer chipping, they invariably come close to holing the chip shot. But when you watch an amateur golfer chip, they often miss the pin by a long way. So in this article I’m going to give you some advice to improve your chipping accuracy.

Now the first thing you must do to improve your chipping accuracy is to aim the clubface in the correct direction . Aiming the club should be one of the simplest things in golf, but very few golfers do this well. The reason why I think this is so, is because most golfers setup at the final target instead of an intermediate target.

Whether you’re chipping, pitching or hitting a long shot, you should always pick out your final target and then imagine a line back from this to your ball. Then pick out a spot about 2-3 feet in front of your ball on that target line, that you can aim at. Doing this will make it much easier for you to aim your club, instead of trying to aim it at some target which is often yards and yards away.

So to improve your chipping accuracy that’s the very first thing you must do.

Then once you’re setup accurately you obviously need to swing. Here’s a key thing to remember – when you’re chipping it’s such a simple swing, much like a bigger version of your putting motion.

The reason why so many golfers find chipping so hard is because they use too many moving parts in their chipping swing. That’s why I often recommend that golfers use their putting grip for chip shots, and use the same pendulum action as they do when putting.

When you’re practicing your chipping accuracy, a good drill is to get an umbrella and place it so it’s pointing directly towards your target. Then simply place a ball just on the inside of it so you have enough room to put the clubhead to the ball, then chip parallel to the line of the umbrella.

You will have to move the club to the inside going back and through, but you want to feel like the club is moving more back and through, just like putting.

So here’s a summary of what you should do to improve your accuracy when chipping…

• Pick an intermediate target 2-3 feet in front of your ball on a line directly to your target, and setup making sure the clubface is pointing directly at your intermediate target.
• Chip along the line of your umbrella, feeling as though you’re swinging more straight back and straight through, with a simple pendulum action like you use when putting.
