The Broom Drill for Longer, More Powerful Drives

To hit longer drives, you need width — a wide arc back and through. Today I’ve got a simple but powerful drill that will train you to create that width and add serious distance to your shots.

And all you need is a broom…

Grip the broom just like you would a golf club, and set up as if you’re about to hit a shot.

Now swing the broom, focusing on creating as much extension as possible — both on the backswing and through the follow-through.

👉 Key tip: At the top of your backswing, start the downswing by moving your left knee toward the target. This gets the lower body leading and gives you the proper sequencing to generate maximum power at impact.

Notice how all the long drivers in the game have wide arcs? This drill will help you build the same.

⚠️ One word of caution: the broom adds resistance, so start slowly. This drill is excellent for active flexibility, but swinging too hard too soon could strain your body.

Once you’re comfortable with 10 smooth swings, it’s time to build speed. Here’s the progression I recommend for one session of 10 swings:

1st swing: 50% speed

2nd: 60% speed

3rd: 70% speed

4th: 80% speed

5th: 90% speed

6th–10th: 95% speed

⚡ Important: never go full 100%. Always keep just a little in reserve to protect yourself from injury.

Do this regularly, and you’ll develop more width, better sequencing, and faster clubhead speed — the winning combo for hitting it further.
