A student of my online golf school asked me recently….“what position should the left wrist be at the top of the backswing — cupped, bowed, flat?”. And this is a very important question so I created a video to show you the answer. Be warned however, the answer may not be what you expect BUT it’s very, very important you watch this as I share some very important information about what should be happening in the golf swing. Also, if you suffer from a slice problem you’ll want to watch this video NOW!
Enjoy!

Video quite OK here in Kent England. Advice as usual simple and succint. Makes a lot of sense. Can’t wait to try it

Hi Nick,
I found this valuable as I am a beginner — one and half years — and I am having real trouble with my irons. However, I seem to be pulling — not drawing — my iron shots both long and short. I have mostly corrected my tendency to slice woods by correcting grip placement and pressure, but I seem to be carrying this closing of the clubface onto my irons with horrible results. I will practice as you advise.

Great vid Nick.I’ve noticed that i do turn my wrists over on the backswing occasionally resulting in an open face and a slice so this tip should help me alot. Thanks.

Sorry to see so many other folks are having problems viewing this video. I am in Canada and have no problem seeing the clip. I notice for the first time the “Youtube” logo on the screen; the previous clips were on Google video, I think and I had a lot of problems with those. It was another great tip, by the way, and I hope all the other folks can eventually get to see it too. Thank you, Nick.

This video is totally unfair. It is stinkin February here. 32 degrees. No leaves. No cicadas in the trees. No bugs at all. Haven’t seen a short sleeve shirt in months. And you are doing this to us.

This would make more sense to us if you would put on a parka and go find a snow field to do some of these videos.

Nick,This Video is enlightened and certainly ,if practiced as you suggest, will prove an absolute winner. The basics envolved are so easy and simple to adopt.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Nick, thanks for the info.I had no problem viewing. I know it’s cold here about 10, but your in Australia in the summer. So when I’m playing you’ll be inside.I guess Tom hasn’t tried swinging inside.

Great videos, thanks so much. I struggle the most from a lateral sway. Results in feeling out of balance at the top (or reverse pivot), then my body tends to react by throwing my arms at the ball (to try to remain in balance). So, if you could have a video about limiting sways to rotate more, that would be outstanding.

Hi Nick
Enjoy your stuff and find it really useful. However, how about, in consideration to left-handers, that instead of talking about “left” & “right” wrists, legs, knees etc, you talk about “front’ & “back”? Yes, I know – I can transpose “right for left” & vice-versa, but it’s a pain and can be confusing. Certainly, I use the “front & back” expression when discussing golf with right-handers, and every body is clear on what’s being said.

Hi Nick…..gr8 videos and very informative. I have got a problem that you may be able to advise on. I have developed a hook/draw with my long irons (4 & 5) and my Driver & 3 wood. Also if trying to punch shots into the wind, same thing, but with any club. Have DG R300 shafts. Any help/advise would be very much appreciated. Cheers

Nick they all say to hit solid long shots you have to hit from inside out possibley you can do a video to explain how to get the club to travel on this path MAYBE YOU have a few drills for us to use to encourage such a plane thank’s mate

I’ve been doing your Draw System for several months, and it has in fact virtually eliminated my slice, THANKS. The one problem that I do have is a Pull/Draw that land the ball far left. I can do the box drill without striking the box and still get the Pull/Draw. I videoed myself and it looks like as I turn my hips, the shoulders start turning before impact. So the club head starts inside-out, but turns back to the inside before it reaches the ball. Do you have any suggestions or drills for this?
February 21st, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Nick, Excellent work. I tend to hit my irons which start off startight towards the pin but 3/4 of the way down, the ball abruptly starts moving to the left, thus causing me loss of strokes.

Hi Nick,I also have trouble getting into all your video’s and I really would like to see this one or at least a transcript.
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:55 am
Nick, I had forgotten that part of your earlier instruction to keep te club head closed. In my backswing my wrist used to be very cupped and the result was my clubface was very open and to correct during the downswing I had to uncup my wrist and the result forced an outside to inside swing. When I “think” about pushing my left wrist to the left, the result is it stays where it should as does the club face. That allowed me to swing inside to out MUCH easier and the result was nothing short of a dramatic improvement that now allows me to draw the ball at will. For me it was easier to think about the wrist position than if my club head was closed or open. Your video tied the pieces together. Its all cause and affect. Thank you !!

For other readers, I have been taking instruction from Nick for almost 5 years and he has taken me from an average of 126 to my current 92 and it is continuing to drop and this video in particular has as I said had one of the most amazing affects on my ability to make shots. Thanks again Nick

I’m not sure why people are saying the video is no longer available or why some people can’t see it. But it is available so if you’re having trouble go here:

I believe in all the instruction I have received from Jim Mclean, etc. the toe up position at the half way point in the golf swing is open. Since, your upper body is bent forward this is a square position and not closed as you described.

Nick, Video & Audio kept stopping & starting, so it it was hard to get any continuity? Not sure whether it was on your end or mine?

Type your comment here.Since I have been playing golf for only three years, and knowing how important it is to have flat left wrist, at impact, after much research, your short video and explanation is clear. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Kind of dug up this vid. but I think it’s a very useful one.
I just have a couple questions though:
So you’re saying there’s no pronation of the left arm during the backswing, just keep the clubface slightly closed,is this correct?
And does the same hold true for the driver?
I just can’t get myself to swing the driver with a closed clubface
on the takeaway.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Hi Chris, you shouldn’t be consciously trying to rotate the left arm in the backswing. The closed clubface should be a result of your grip and setup.

Hi Nick:
I like the way you flatten your left wrist at address by simply moving your hands a few inches towards the left thigh! I was trying to achieve the same and using a starting trigger by gently pushing the right thumb pad on the left thumb pad that would pronate the left wrist under the right and also make my club shaft parallel to the ground with closed club face. One scary drawback is that it can cause some pain in the left wrist at times.
Pls also explain or show a video on how to achieve good wrist cock at the top position! At times I can’t get a good wrist cock or maintain it thru impact!
Another problem, tell me if it is related to this setup issue! When I am making a solid contact on approach shorts 5,6,7 irons I am missing the green from the left!
Thanks!
