People have been asking me how my quest for averaging greater than 125 mph swing speed is going.

Well, I’m going to physio every week to help my knee get better and as part of my rehab I’m doing quite a bit of biking. I’ve even gone so far to buy a stationary bike. Here is the bike I bought:

So by doing the physio and biking my knee is healing well. But I haven’t swung a golf club with full speed since injuring my knee. I think I could but I’m not going to try….yet!

Here’s my plan.

I am going to keep strengthening up my knee and other parts of my body until the end of October. Then I’m going to focus on speed in November and December in an all out effort to reach my goal of averaging over 125 mph by the end of the year. But to do that I need my body to be solid and in good shape.

Before I start the speed work I’ll do a swing speed test to see where I’m at with my swing and I’ll post the results video on here. Wish me luck.

Here’s a video where I share with you a great exercise that I’ve been doing this year to help me increase my swing speed. So watch it and then I’ve got some important points to reiterate after. But I apologize in advance for the not very polished performance. I did this video two days after Jacinda was born so I was a bit tired.

This exercise I’ve just shown you is a great one for increasing active flexibility and speed at the same time. BUT, as I said in the video…it can be quite hard on your body. So if you decide to do this exercise only do it 3 times a week and start off real slow. For example, on your first day only do one swing. Then on the 3rd day do two swings and keep adding a swing each time until you can do 10 swings in one session. Remember however, you want to swing as fast as possible each swing. So take 30 – 60 seconds between each swing to give yourself a chance to recover from the previous swing and to make sure you give the next swing 100% of your attention and about 95% of your effort. Don’t swing at 100% of your potential speed because you want to hold back a little bit to help prevent injuries.

Good luck and if you have any questions about this exercise just post a comment and ask me.

It’s a new year and I have set a New Year’s Resolution for my golf game.

Here it is.

By the 31st of December 2008 I want to average greater than 125 mph for my driver swings.

Now the great thing about that goal for you is that by way of this ConsistentGolf blog I’m going to keep you updated on:

what I’m doing,

how my progress is going,

and I’m going to give you tips and instructions on what you can do to
hit the ball further (and straighter too!).

Exciting huh?

To start this off I recorded my swing with my driver and a SwingMate today on the 1st of January 2008.

To do this test I hit 10 drives to warm up. Then I hit 10 drives and recorded each swing speed with SwingMate. Here is a video of this test….

The result of those 10 drives was that I averaged 98 mph.

So to reach my goal I will have to increase my average swing speed by 27 mph. Which is going to be no small feat!

Now I don’t know if you’re aware of this or not, but for every 1 mph you increase your swing speed you add 2.2 – 2.5 yards to your shots. So when I achieve my goal I would have added between 59.4 – 67.5 yards to my shots!

That’s going to be fun!

To keep you up to date with my progress, every 4 weeks this year I’m going to complete a swing speed test just like the one I’ve shown you today. So the next swing speed test I’m going to do will be on the 28th of January 2008. In between then and now I will give you some great things you can do to hit the ball further. But one major thing I’m going to focus on to swing faster initially is to improve my flexibility.

It’s been a while since I’ve done any flexibility exercises. And I know from past expereince that by doing this I will swing faster. But we’ll have to wait and see by how much on the 28th of January.

Finally, if you haven’t already done so, I suggest you click here and fill in the form to subscribe to this ConsisentGolf blog. You’ll learn a lot and in the process and I’m sure you’ll add some extra yards to your drives in the process.

The Golf Swing Test

You could have one serious swing fault costing you up to 50 yards in distance. But now you can take this swing test and see if you have this swing fault or not: http://www.yourgolfswingtest.com
