There is nothing worse than swinging a golf club and feeling the golf club slipping through your hands, because if that happens you’re almost guaranteed a terrible shot. And unless you’re Tiger Woods it’s very hard to stop the swing when you’re half way down to the ball.
I have no idea how Tiger does that!
Anyway, if the weather is very hot and humid the chances of your grip slipping as you’re swinging goes way up. Also, if you’re playing in the rain then naturally the chances of your grip slipping as you make your golf swing go up as well.
But there are simple solutions to this problem which don’t have to cost you anything. And the first solution is a dry towel.
When you play golf you should carry at least 1 extra golf towel. Ideally you should carry two extra golf towels however. And if you’re getting hot and sweaty or it’s raining then before and after every golf shot you should be wiping your golf grips and hands with one of your dry towels.
Also, if it’s raining then I suggest that you keep your towel under an umbrella to try and keep it dry for as long as possible. Then when your towel is not doing a good enough job then simply put it back in your golf bag and get another dry towel out.
Now here’s a neat trick.
Every hole or two simply get some sand from the bunkers (or from the little buckets they give you to put in divots) and rub the sand on your hands and on your golf grips. This will help to absorb the sweat and it will help you to keep a firm golf grip as you’re swinging.
Important Note: If you’re a women golfer you may prefer to take some talcum powder with you to the golf course and put this on your hands instead of sand.
So the next time you play a game of golf where it is possibly going to rain or be hot and humid…or heaven forbid….both at the same time! Then make sure you take at least two towels and try your best to keep them dry. Then every golf hole or two put some sand on your hands and on your grips. Doing these things will help you to keep your golf grip from slipping as you’re swinging. Because again, there’s nothing worse than going to play a golf shot and having your hands feel as though they are going to slip on the golf grip, is there?

USGA rules permit a handkerchief. Even with wet glove and grips, no slipping.

Hi,
My name is Jon O’Reilly and I live in Dublin ,Ireland ,I am studying to be a Professional golf Coach with a Federation and would love to here any advice you could give me that will help me advise my students about problems such as the grip slipping .I myself have suffered this problem all my golfing life .I have got a problem with sweaty palms ,no matter what the conditions ,which causes the club to slip or turn over ,particularly on impact and it is very annoying when you have put a good swing on the shot ,only to feel the club turn over on impact and ruin what otherwise could have been a great shot ,Now if you can imagine this happening several times a round ,think what damage it is doing to your score and your handicap .I do know through research that quiet a lot off golfers off all ages and levels off ability suffer this problem and apart from the advice you have suggested about the towels and sand ,I would like to suggest some things that might help and would love to hear some feedback on them from anybody that might have read this article .
Firstly the people who suffer sweaty palms like me ,I would suggest that they try some breathing excersises whilst out on the course .I have found through my research that sweaty palms are caused by excessive thinking on the course coupled with worrying about what they are doing wrong (on a bad day) ,or worrying about certain holes they have to play that might ruin a good round (on a good day) .Every thought we make ,either positive or negitive on a golf course or in any given situation in life ,will cause the brain to secrete sweat to certain parts off the body ,particularly the forehead ,hands and armpits .Unpleasant I know ,but fact and one way to combat this is to calm the body down through relaxation like breathing excersises .I have tried this and can tell you that it does work .
I would also like to give people a piece off simple advice about this problem in that you can now have grips fitted to your clubs to suit you personally and combat that problem for you .New golf grips are very reasonable nowadays and if it stopped the problem off slipping clubs in your hand ,which in turn could cost you the sunday medal at your local golf club just by a few shots being lost to the problem ,I think it would be money well spent ,don’t you ?
If people cannot afford to upgrade their grips then another important tip I would suggest is to always make sure your grips are clean and to clean them regularly .As a golf coach I take an active part in making sure that all my students have the best possible equipment they can afford and always ask them to look after it .I ask all my students to arrive at a lesson with clean clubs ,to which they do .But the one thing I notice with all my students is the fact that they never clean the grips ,till I tell them the importance off it .During a round off golf ,a golfer will impart quiet a lot off dirt and grime onto their grips just by the conditions they are playing in or because off sweaty hands etc. .Now over the space off even a few weeks this can cause the grips to become virtually usless on the club because the dirt and grime has rendered the grips useless .They are not helping the golfer grip the club with the proper amount off grip .I often here golfers say that they felt like they have lost a bit off feel with their clubs and then start thinking that maybe the clubs are at fault when in actual fact it is the owners neglect off the clubs that is the problem .Instead off just replacing the grips ,a golfer thinks they must buy a new set off clubs .I would advise that golfers pay more attention to the grip off a club above all else .A good tip on cleaning grips is to use simple household oven cleaner and rub some into their grips ,leave for 20 minutes or so and then rinse through with some warm water and leave to dry .I guarantee the next time they use their clubs they will regain that lost feel ,just by having clean grips .I would suggest that you do this often enough to keep the grips clean but not to often that they ruin the grips .
I hope that these tips will help and if anyone has read this and tried it ,I would value any feedback you can give at jon.oreilly1@gmail.com – Professional Golf Coach and Writer, thank you
