Whether you use a wristy putting stroke, no wrist putting stroke or something in between, there is something that you must do IF you ever want to be a good, consistent putter.  And what I’m talking about is your grip pressure must stay the same from when you start your putting stroke.  So if you start with a firm putting grip then you MUST keep that same firmness throughout your entire putting stroke.

And the same with any putting grip pressure you use.  This is an absolute fundamental of putting.  Keep the same grip pressure throughout your entire putting stroke.  And now you know this, go out and practice maintaining your grip pressure when putting and then keep checking it all the time. Because if you lighten your putting grip pressure when putting it will cause you to push putts and if you strengthen it, it will cause you to pull putts.

So keep your putting grip pressure the same throughout your entire stroke.  This is critical.

  1. Grip pressure is interesting but my question is should the left and right hands have equal pressure or left more than right (I am right handed by the way)?
    Thanks

  2. You really need to experiment and find out what works best for you. With grip pressure their is no set rules. The key is not to change your grip pressure as you’re stroking no matter what it’s like to start with.

Having said that, I would recommend a light grip pressure over a firm one — in both hands. But I know of golfers that prefer a firm putting grip when putting and focus on having one hand hold the putter firmer than the other.

    So again, experiment!
