If you are playing on a course with fast greens you will have to allow for more break, because the ball has less friction (grass) to encounter.  So play for more break on fast greens and less on slow greens.

If it has been raining or is raining when you are playing golf, this will obviously slow the greens down so you will have to allow for less break.
