Today I completed a golf swing speed test. As I said in the last post, this is a week late because I wanted to give what I’ve been doing a chance to transfer over to my golf swing. So what was I doing for 4 weeks?

I was doing plyometric exercises for the legs. I felt my legs were quite weak and a limiting factor for my golf swing. And over the 4 weeks the power output of my legs improved a lot. But here are the results of the golf swing speed test today…

Now as you have just seen. I averaged 116.8 mph today which was down from 117.7 mph in the last golf swing speed test 5 weeks ago.

So I’ve figured something else that doesn’t work. :-) And I think it highlights something very important. If you’re doing any exercise that takes longer than 8 seconds to complete I believe you’ll be helping to improve your strength/endurance NOT helping you to swing faster. So I would recommend not doing any exercises that are like 3 sets of 15 reps IF you’re trying to improve your swing speed.

Instead do exercises for less than 8 seconds as fast as possible. Then rest for a minute or so and do it again.

So what am I going to do now?

Well, as I have said before…on the 23rd of May I was averaging 121.8 mph with my driver so I’m going to go back to doing the exercises I was doing up until that point. The reason I stopped was because I had a back injury.

The next swing speed test is going to be on the 11th of August. Hopefully I’ll get my swing speed up again by then.

  1. Where can I get a swing speed indicator.
At 74years how can I increase my swing speed.

  2. Is there a basic and easy way of increasing swing speed as some people younger and healthier cannot swing as fast as some golfers that are older and in less physical shape or condition.

  3. Look at the bigger picture though Nick. You may reap the benefit of your stronger legs later in a round. Being fitter might enable you to pick up a few shots later in a round.

    Swing speed is not everything.

When you start to build up your
swing speed due you sometimes lose
your timing?. The reason I asked
is that I bought the Momentus Power
Driver and my first two rounds were
    horrendous.

  5. NIck, I don’t see the relaxed flexibility that was once there. At the end like in swings nine and ten there is a look of stiffness and literally no forward press.

  6. Marsden, the best place to get a swing speed radar is here: http://www.swingspeedradar.com/ And the best thing you can do to increase your swing speed at 74 years of age is to improve your active flexibility. Here is a DVD I recommend you get that will help you to do that: http://www.consistentgolf.com/bh/

And Doug, if I wanted to last better an entire round I would have a more balanced training program. Not what I’m after at the moment.

Mike, you may be right….which I think would be a result of not doing much in the way of actually swinging. I’m going to do get onto that though.

  7. nick i have trouble getting distance.someone has recently told me to flick the club forward as i am about to hit the ball to get extra distance.is this fact or fiction.
    thank you.
ps.i enjoyand accept all the info you send.
    thanks j.clarke

  8. You should not flick at the ball to try and get more distance. At impact you want your left wrist to be flat. You can’t do that by flicking.
