A person left a comment on this blog about a slice problem. So to help them out and the rest of you that suffer from a slice here’s the 4 step proven formula I’ve used to cure literally thousands of golfers slice problem. So without any further delay here are the 4 things you must do to fix your golf slice in the quickest possible time…

1. Setup for a draw
2. Swing from the inside so the ball starts to the right (for a right handed golfer) of your final target
3. Contact the ball with a slightly closed clubface
4. Have equipment that encourages you to draw the ball

Now that list of 4 things is generally the opposite of what every golfer does to hit a slice. For example, when a right handed golfer suffers from a slicing problem they generally aim to the left to allow for a slice which just makes it worse, doesn’t it?

Now the absolute quickest possible way to fix your slice is to do the exact opposite of what you’re currently doing. So that means you have to setup for a hook. Then you need to try and swing a lot from the inside and release your hands a lot through impact so you contact the ball with a slightly closed clubface. And finally, you need equipment that helps you to hit a draw/hook.

If you did all of these things you could fix your slice tomorrow.

Seriously! It would happen that fast.

But here’s the problem…because it would feel so strange for you to do all of these things at the same time you would barely hit the golf ball…at least for a few days.

You see, golfers are adverse to change. It’s taken you a long time to build up the habit of slicing and if you go slowly at trying to fix it then it will take a long time to fix it, if you ever do it at all.

Now I assume you want to fix your slice sooner rather than later. So trust me, the absolute fastest way to fix your slice is to forget about results for a few days (even up to a couple of weeks) and exaggerate the exact opposite of what you do to hit a slice. And if you’re like most of my students who do this, after a few days you’ll be hitting the ball straight!

Yes straight!

If you exaggerate the opposite of what you do to hit a slice you’ll eventually hit the ball straight not hook it. I know that sounds weird but that’s just how the golf swing works. Because what you think you’re doing as you’re swinging and what you’re really doing are normally two completely different things.

Now when you’re making changes to your golf swing to fix your slice you’ve got to work on one thing at a time. And the best place to start is with the setup. You need to setup the opposite of what you’re currently doing. So have a strong grip, align yourself to the right of the target, position the ball back in your stance etc., etc.

This will be tough to do but if you REALLY want to fix your slice you’ll do it.

Once you’ve done that you then want to exaggerate swinging from the inside. Then you’ve got to work on releasing your hands through impact so you contact the ball with a slightly closed clubface. Finally, if your equipment is promoting a slice rather than a draw then you must get equipment that encourages you to hit a draw/hook.

So that’s the proven formula you need to follow to fix your slice. And remember, to get the fastest results you must exaggerate the opposite of what you’re currently doing to hit your slice. To make a start I recommend you change your grip to make it stronger, because I know of golfers that have just done that and fixed their golf slice. So start with making changes to your setup and then progress through the rest of this proven formula after that. If you’d like me to give you more help in doing that click here.

  1. I think not only method of backswing that influence the slice, also type of sticks themselves can influence the slice. Reguler shaft for wood 1, 2 and 3 tend to be slice unless we don’t take extra concentration on the backswing. I hope mr. Nick Bayley will show us another emthod to overcome this problem. Best regards.

  2. Nick,
Can you explain Releasing the club and Extension on the follow through? Also If I have a bad habbit of not doing that, are there any drills to get great extension and releasing of the club!?

    Thanks,
    Matt

  3. One thing that I found helps a slicer is to take a slightly stronger grip on the club. The two “V”s should point to your right ear and you should see two knuckles and some of the third on the left hand. Doing that with a slight alignment change (aiming slightly right of target) fixed my slice.
Nick, keep up the good work. I visit over a dozen golf sites on a regular basis and I find yours to be among the better ones. Thanks.

  4. Type your comment here. hallo Nick, in the past you gave me the advice to hold a stronger grip. It surely helped. Since that day i’m hitting very straigt, thanks to you Nick!!!
    with friendly regards,
    Cijnthia.

  5. Nick, I know you must be right as I have a tendency to swing from “outside” to direct the ball to the left and all that it must be doing is putting spin on the ball on contact and making it slice. Even with a closed face it still ;uts that wrong spin on the ball.
I’m from Minnesota and it won’t be golf weather until late March or April so I have to wait to give it a couple of weeks! I’ve printed this out and will follow this guide for SURE! Thanks, Frank

  6. Excellent advice!
No doubt Nick will cover what is involved in releasing properly in his next few lessons, but for me I have found recently that getting the timing of the weight transfer correct (Nick’s recent drill illustrates this very well)combined with an anti-clockwise rotation of the left arm in the down swing has made an enormous difference to my power and accuracy. This is mainly as a result of reading “Search for the Perfect Swing” by Alastair Cochrane updated recently (ISBN No 1-57243-729-4 published by Triumph)It is referred to by Gary Wiren as “The most influential instructional golf book in history” Dave Pelz also says”…The only book of its kind in the world” I cannot recommend it highly enough for its scientific approach as to what is actually happening in the golf swing.(It does not appear to be known amongst the professionals I have met) Combined with some of Nick’s teaching I am really enjoying my golf once again and scoring very much better.
The book is particularly helpful in showing what happens when you come over the top and also how you can help to avoid it by rotating the left arm in the downswing. It means you can avoid ending up in the weak chicken-wing position after impact.Hopefully Nick this can/will be covered in your teaching?

  7. Oops! Sorry, I should have said that Gary Wiren regards the Cochrane work as “maybe ” the best instructional golf book in the world!

  8. everyone speaks of the inside path and a slightly closed face, please could you illustrate the positions of the leading edge of the club approaching up to the exact point of contact and then immediately after.

  9. Nick,Thanks for your articles and book..You mention equipment to encourage a draw.I didn’t really understand this  but recently I had some clubs made to measure.Slight adjustments to the lie have helped me but one of the crucial discoveries was that I have short fingers and by having thinner grips this helped to improve my hand action and the releasing of the club which along with your advice has helped me to hit staighter shots.Interestingly my wood grips have not been adjusted yet and I still have a tendency to fade/slice with them.I would be interesred in your thoughts-Keep up the good work!Mike

  10. I cannot open any of your videos. Is it my computer, software or me?

  11. Just wanted to let other readers know from someone who used to have the worst slice known to man, that this technique described by NICK REALLY works. What messed it up at first for me was that I wanted to move on and learn other things before I had this down pat. This one set of instructions dropped 12 strokes off my game in one year. Over time I would also lose a little of what I learned so I come back for maintenance training. Thanks again NICK for helping me find my golf swing !!
